The town was named after a nearby creek, Altamont Creek. The creek was named for John Altamont Davis, a prominent early settler who owned a large amount of land in the area.
The first post office opened in Altamont in 1875 and by 1880 it had grown to include a schoolhouse, bank, newspaper office, and several general stores. A flour mill and sawmill were also constructed during this time period. In 1890 the Altamont Bank & Trust Company became one of the first banks in Kansas to open with an all-female board of directors. This bank would eventually become one of the largest employers in town by the turn of the century. During this time period, several churches were built as well as two hotels which welcomed travelers from all over Kansas and beyond.
In 1901 an interurban railroad line connected Altamont to nearby Parsons and Pittsburg providing easy access to these cities for residents living in Altamont. This line eventually expanded further southward into Oklahoma making it possible for people to travel between both states quickly and easily by train.
The city continued to thrive throughout the twentieth century with businesses such as lumber yards, grain elevators, feed mills, implement companies, automobile dealerships, department stores and more opening up over time. Today there are still many businesses operating within Altamont that have been around since its founding including some original buildings from its earliest days such as the Masonic Lodge Hall which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
