Tibet: entry and exit regulations

Formalities

A visa for China and a special entry permit for foreigners are required to travel to Tibet. The visa can be obtained from the Chinese embassy, ​​the special entry permit must be applied for on site in Tibet.

Import and export of foreign currency

  • Local currency
    Up to RMB 6,000 may be imported regardless of nationality.
  • Foreign Currencies
    Non-Chinese nationals may import up to US $ 5,000 or the equivalent in other currencies, and Chinese nationals may import up to US $ 2,000 or the equivalent in other currencies. Otherwise an import declaration must be submitted.

Import and export of goods

It is forbidden to import offensive writings or to import Dalai Lama pictures that are not intended for personal use. The export of antiques is subject to strict regulations, divided according to the type and importance of the art objects.

Infectious diseases

In Tibet, the following infectious diseases, which are rarely or rarely widespread in Germany and Central and Northern Europe, can be expected:

  • Malaria: There is only a year-round risk of malaria infection in the Zangbo Valley, in the south-east of the country. Almost all infections are caused by tertian malaria. There is no risk of malaria infection in areas above 2,000 m
  • Amoebic dysentery
  • Bacterial agitation
  • Cholera– an infection risk exists only for those travelers who may come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food.
  • Intestinal infections– from contaminated food or water, including amoebas, lamblia, salmonella, shigella, worm infestation and all kinds of viruses and bacteria.
  • Filariasis
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Kala Azar disease
  • Lambliasis
  • Leishmaniasis Disease
  • Polio, polio
  • tetanus
  • rabies
  • Typhoid– applies only to travelers who may come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food.

Recommended vaccinations
when traveling to Tibet are recommended vaccinations against the following diseases:

  • Cholera– applies to travelers who may come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food.
  • Diphtheria– a vaccination against diphtheria should always exist, also in the home country.
  • Hepatitis A and B– a vaccination against hepatitis A should always exist, also in the home country. Vaccination against hepatitis B is only required for those who may come into contact with blood or who have sexual contact.
  • Polio, polio– vaccination against polio should always exist, also in the home country.
  • Meningococcal meningitis
  • Tetanus– a vaccination against tetanus should always exist, also in the home country.
  • Rabies– only applies to high-risk travelers who may come into contact with the vector animals.
  • Typhoid– applies only to travelers who may come into contact with polluted water or contaminated food.

Malaria prophylaxis
When traveling in the country, with the exception of the Zangbo Valley region, malaria prophylaxis is not required. If you have concerns about the side effects of prophylaxis when traveling to the Zangbo Valley, you should at least bring a stand-by product with you.
